Generating novel plant genetic variation via genome editing to escape the breeding lottery

چکیده

Abstract Plant breeding relies on the presence of genetic variation, which is generated by a random process mutagenesis that acts existing gene pools. This variation then recombined into new forms at frequencies impacted local euchromatin and heterochromatin environment. The result lottery where plant breeders face increasingly low odds generating “winning” genotype. Genome editing tools enable targeted manipulation genome, providing means to increase enhancing chances for success. Editing can be applied in way, known improves performance directly brought lines interest through either deletion or insertion. empowers approaches are traditionally difficult such as novel domestication introgression wild accessions germplasm pool. Furthermore, broader editing-mediated recombination enhancement bring ways creation toolbox. Continued development application genome will needed aid meeting critical global crop improvement needs.

Is Genome Editing Techniques the New Challenge for Plant Breeding?

Plant breeding is the “art and science” of the genetic improvement of crops to produce new varieties that had a large impact on crop yield and food production. Genetic variation is the engine that propels breeding to meet future challenges and this variation is due to intraand inter-specific recombination. The recombinant DNA technology marked the beginning of a new era, indeed conventional pla...

Potential of Chloroplast Genome in Plant Breeding

Chloroplast engineering (or chloroplast transformation technology, CTT) is a strategy consisting of inserting a transgene into the chloroplast genome of a plant instead of its nuclear genome. CTT brings advantages such as control of the site of gene insertion, high rates of transgene expression and protein accumulation, lack of transmission of the transgene via pollen due to the fact that plast...
